- The US has 5% of the world’s population but 25% of its prison population
- Mandatory minimum sentences have increased the prison population by 800% since 1980
- 45% of federal inmates are serving time for non-violent drug offenses
- Racial disparities persist throughout the criminal justice system
- Rehabilitative programs reduce recidivism by up to 43%
The Justice Reform Act would:
- Eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent offenses
- Expand judicial discretion in sentencing decisions
- Increase funding for rehabilitation, education, and vocational training
- Create incentives for participation in rehabilitation programs
- Establish a pathway for sentence review of excessive punishments
Our advocacy strategy includes:
- Filing amicus briefs in key court cases challenging excessive sentences
- Developing model legislation based on successful state reforms
- Creating a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers, prosecutors, and law enforcement
- Funding research on the economic and social benefits of sentencing reform
- Amplifying voices of formerly incarcerated individuals who have successfully reintegrated
