Maine’s rural communities face a growing crisis in access to justice:
◆ 14 of Maine’s 16 counties have fewer than 1 attorney per 1,000 residents ◆ Rural Mainers travel an average of 42 miles to reach legal assistance ◆ 78% of low-income rural residents face civil legal problems without representation ◆ Rural courts have seen a 35% decrease in legal aid availability since 2010 ◆ Poverty rates in rural Maine exceed urban areas by nearly 5 percentage points
When legal help isn’t available, Mainers lose:
- Homes to unlawful evictions and foreclosures
- Critical benefits that prevent hunger and homelessness
- Protection from domestic violence and exploitation
- Consumer protections against predatory practices
- Educational opportunities for children with disabilities
OUR RURAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE
MOBILE LEGAL CLINICS
🚐 Deploying 3 fully-equipped mobile legal offices to:
- Provide on-site consultations in 24 rural communities
- Offer secure video conferencing with specialists
- Conduct document preparation and court filing
- Deliver know-your-rights workshops
- Connect clients with comprehensive support services
RURAL ADVOCATE TRAINING

- Training 75 community advocates across rural Maine
- Developing a rural legal resource network
- Providing mentorship for rural practitioners
- Creating accessible legal self-help materials
- Establishing rural-urban attorney partnerships
