SEEKING CLIMATE JUSTICE THROUGH THE COURTS
As climate impacts intensify across the Global South, communities are increasingly turning to legal systems for justice. Strategic climate litigation offers powerful potential to:
• Hold major carbon emitters accountable for climate damages • Enforce national climate commitments and international obligations • Secure resources for community-led adaptation • Establish legal precedents protecting environmental rights • Challenge regulatory failures and government inaction
However, significant barriers prevent effective climate litigation in many countries:
• Limited financial resources for complex, lengthy cases • Gaps in scientific evidence linking local impacts to global causes • Unequal access to legal expertise and technical knowledge • Procedural obstacles in domestic legal systems • Political and economic pressures on courts and complainants
THE GLOBAL SOUTH CLIMATE LITIGATION FUND
Our campaign establishes a pioneering fund to support strategic climate litigation across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific Islands, and the Caribbean with four core services:
|1| LEGAL RESOURCES & EXPERTISE
• Financial support for litigation costs • Connecting communities with specialized attorneys • Comparative legal research across jurisdictions • Amicus brief development for precedent-setting cases • Training for local legal practitioners on climate law
|2| SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE DEVELOPMENT
• Attribution science linking specific impacts to climate change • Economic analysis of climate damages • Expert testimony coordination • Evidence preservation protocols for climate impacts • Technical support for emissions accounting
|3| COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT
• Paralegal training in affected communities • Documentation tools for climate impacts • Security protocols for environmental defenders • Communications support for case narratives • Coalition building among similarly affected groups
|4| SYSTEMIC CHANGE ACCELERATION
• Strategic case selection for maximum impact • Knowledge sharing across jurisdictions • Policy advocacy based on litigation insights • Media engagement amplifying case outcomes • Monitoring implementation of favorable judgments
OUR APPROACH
The Fund will be governed by a diverse council of legal experts and climate justice advocates from across the Global South, ensuring resources support genuinely transformative cases with strong potential for systems change.
We focus on cases that: • Represent communities most vulnerable to climate impacts • Challenge structural inequities in climate response • Have potential for precedent-setting outcomes • Build capacity within national legal systems • Connect to broader climate justice movements
“The courts may be our last, best hope for climate justice. But only if all communities—not just the privileged few—can access them effectively.” – Climate Justice Legal Network
Your support will help communities seeking climate justice access the legal tools and expertise they need to be heard.
