RECLAIMING AFRICA’S FOOD SYSTEMS
Despite producing 70% of Africa’s food, small-scale farmers and pastoral communities face intensifying challenges:
• Land grabbing by international investors and domestic elites • Corporate capture of seed systems and agricultural policies • Trade agreements undermining local production and markets • Climate impacts threatening traditional farming knowledge • Development models favoring industrial agriculture over agroecology
The current trajectory threatens both rural livelihoods and food security across the continent.

A CONTINENTAL APPROACH TO FOOD SOVEREIGNTY
The African Continental Food Sovereignty Alliance advocates for a comprehensive framework with five interconnected pillars:
PILLAR 1: SEED & AGRICULTURAL BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION
• Recognition of farmers’ rights to save, use, exchange and sell seeds • Protection of indigenous crop varieties and livestock breeds • Community seed bank networks with legal protection • Rejection of restrictive intellectual property regimes on living organisms • Research support for farmer-led participatory breeding
PILLAR 2: LAND & RESOURCE RIGHTS SECURITY
• Implementation of AU Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy • Recognition of customary and collective land rights • Transparent investment protocols with community consent requirements • Special protections for women’s land access • Water rights security for small-scale producers
PILLAR 3: AGROECOLOGICAL TRANSITION SUPPORT
• Redirection of agricultural subsidies toward sustainable practices • Farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange platforms • Extension services focused on ecological farming methods • Marketing and certification systems for agroecological products • Climate adaptation strategies based on traditional knowledge
PILLAR 4: LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
• Investment in territorial markets and infrastructure • Public procurement programs sourcing from small-scale producers • Protection of local markets from dumping and unfair competition • Processing facilities owned by producer cooperatives • Urban-rural linkages strengthening direct producer-consumer connections
PILLAR 5: DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE OF FOOD SYSTEMS
• Small producer representation in policy development • Nutritional and cultural values prioritized in food policies • Transparency requirements for corporate influence • Multi-stakeholder platforms with meaningful participation • Rights-based approach to food security and nutrition

OUR ADVOCACY APPROACH
Working with farmer organizations, pastoralist networks, indigenous communities, and food sovereignty movements across the continent, we are:
• Engaging directly with the African Union’s agriculture department • Building an alliance of civil society organizations across all regions • Developing model policies aligned with progressive national examples • Providing technical support for member state implementation • Mobilizing public awareness on food sovereignty principles
VOICES FROM THE MOVEMENT:
“Our ancestors’ agricultural wisdom sustained communities for millennia. Africa’s future food security depends on centering this knowledge rather than replacing it.” – Pan-African Farmers Organization
Join us in supporting a food system that nourishes both people and planet across Africa.
