WEST AFRICA’S SMALLHOLDER FARMERS FACING CLIMATE CRISIS

The region’s 33 million small-scale farmers—who produce 80% of local food—confront escalating challenges:

• Rainfall patterns shifting dramatically, disrupting traditional planting calendars • Temperatures rising 1.5x faster than global averages • Extreme weather events increasing in frequency and intensity • Crop yields projected to decline 20-50% in coming decades • International climate finance rarely reaching family farmers

Despite being minimally responsible for climate change, smallholders bear the greatest adaptation burden with the fewest resources.

GOVERNANCE: PUTTING FARMERS AT THE CENTER

The Fund would be governed through a novel structure ensuring those most affected by climate change lead the response: • Majority farmer representation on decision-making bodies • Gender balance requirements throughout governance • Decentralized allocation through national and local committees • Transparent reporting accessible to all stakeholders • Scientific advisory panel integrating traditional and modern knowledge

Our advocacy campaign will engage ECOWAS, national governments, climate finance institutions, and farmer federations to establish this groundbreaking mechanism for channeling climate finance directly to those who feed West Africa.
