THE GROWING DESERT: A CRISIS ACROSS EURASIA
The heart of the Eurasian continent faces accelerating land degradation: • 420 million hectares already desertified across the region • 24+ million people directly affected by land degradation • Temperatures rising twice as fast as global averages • Water resources declining by 30% in key watersheds • Dust storms increasing in frequency and intensity • Traditional pastoralist livelihoods increasingly threatened
Despite crossing multiple national boundaries, desertification requires coordinated transboundary solutions.

THE EURASIAN ANTI-DESERTIFICATION FRAMEWORK
Our campaign advocates for comprehensive action across Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, and Western China with five key components:
▶️ COORDINATED LAND MANAGEMENT
• Harmonized sustainable grazing protocols • Consistent soil health monitoring methodologies • Shared early warning systems for degradation hotspots • Standardized assessment tools for land restoration • Coordinated seasonal grazing movement regulations
▶️ TRANSBOUNDARY WATER GOVERNANCE
• Basin-wide water allocation agreements • Shared groundwater management protocols • Coordinated irrigation efficiency standards • Joint drought management planning • Water-saving agricultural technique promotion
▶️ ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION AT SCALE
• Region-wide native plant restoration initiatives • Shared seed banks for drought-adapted species • Knowledge exchange on restoration techniques • Coordinated sand dune stabilization efforts • Cross-border green belt initiatives
▶️ SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS ADAPTATION
• Support for climate-resilient pastoral practices • Market development for sustainable products • Traditional knowledge integration in policies • Alternative livelihood development in hotspots • Equitable transition support for affected communities
▶️ CLIMATE ADAPTATION INFRASTRUCTURE
• Coordinated water harvesting technologies • Shared weather monitoring networks • Compatible early warning systems • Drought-resistant agricultural development • Energy systems reducing biomass fuel dependence

OUR ADVOCACY APPROACH
Working through existing platforms including: • Central Asian Regional Environmental Center • Shanghai Cooperation Organization • UN Convention to Combat Desertification programs • China-Central Asia cooperation mechanisms • Regional scientific and research institutions
Our campaign brings together: • Environmental ministries across Eurasia • Pastoralist communities and their representatives • Scientific institutions specializing in drylands • Traditional knowledge holders in affected regions • Economic development agencies in frontline areas
Drawing inspiration from successful models: • Great Green Wall initiative in Africa • Kubuqi Desert restoration in Inner Mongolia • Transboundary water management in the Rhine Basin
Your support will help turn back the tide of desertification across the heart of Eurasia, protecting both ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
