The livestock veterinary shortage threatens both animal welfare and food security as producers struggle to find essential care for their animals. Rural America faces a veterinary crisis that worsens each year:
In my county in western Nebraska, the nearest large-animal vet is now 87 miles away. When my cattle need care, this means hours of delay that can mean life or death. Last spring, I lost a valuable heifer and her calf during a difficult birth because our local vet retired with no replacement. This story repeats across rural America daily.
The causes run deep: crushing student debt averaging $183,000 drives new graduates to higher-paying small animal practices, while rural clinics struggle with challenging economics, long hours, and professional isolation. Yet without livestock veterinarians, our food production system faces increased disease risks, welfare concerns, and producer challenges.
Our proposed legislation creates a comprehensive approach through:
– Student loan forgiveness up to $150,000 for rural practice commitment
– Rural practice start-up grants for equipment and facilities
– Telehealth infrastructure connecting remote areas with specialists
– Tax incentives for mixed practices serving food animals • Educational initiatives exposing students to food animal medicine
By addressing both economic and quality-of-life challenges facing rural veterinarians, we can ensure America’s livestock producers maintain access to essential healthcare services while protecting our food supply chain and animal welfare.
